In a land of sweeping vistas, where food is an art form and history rises from the ground with every excavation, inspiration is everywhere in Italy. A still-life artist could easily be drawn to the romance of an overflowing table—freshly rolled pasta, sun-ripened tomatoes from the open-air market, wheels of artisan cheese, and jewel-toned wines.

But my muse? It lurks in the most unlikely places—the back of a cupboard in a vacation rental, the impulse aisle of a grocery store, the checkout counter at a gas station. Give me the quotidian, the mass-produced, the plastic-wrapped. Better still if it’s been roughed up a bit, edges crinkled, corners softened by handling.

Because even in the most ordinary things, there are details worth noticing—beauty hiding in plain sight, waiting to be caught.
